melvin guillard Melvin Guillard Interview

Melvin Guillard speaks to ufc.com about his Lightweight prospects as it currently stands. Melvin was once considered a hot prospect, until his back to back losses and cocaine suspension all but derailed that train. This kid talks like Tito Ortiz (accusing Joe Stevenson prior to their bout of using Human Growth Hormones) but unfortunately cannot back it up, either factually or in the cage.

…I don’t see myself beating BJ Penn right now, he’s a top guy. Anybody under him, yeah, I can go head to head with and I could give it a shot, but I’m not going to sit here and say that my skills are good enough to beat BJ Penn right now because his ground game is way off the charts.

Perhaps the quote above is a sign of Melvin growing up and maturing, and realizing there are a lot of quality fighters out there besides himself. Guillard steps in the cage against Denis Siver next at UFC 86 next weekend in Las Vegas, in what could be his last chance inside the UFC. Guillard took a fight outside of the UFC after his loss to Rich Clementi and this is his return bout. At 3 wins and 4 losses, he’s running out of chances.
