UFC 101: Penn vs Florian

March 28, 2009 By: MMAVu Category: BJ Penn, Kenny Florian, UFC 101

UFC 101 likley has its main event, and it’s a good one.

Kenny Florian finally gets his shot at 155lb Champion, BJ Penn, after Penn’s failed attempt at simultaneously holding the Lightweight and Welterweight titles. We all know how that debacle turned out after his loss to George St. Pierre.

However, it’s time for Penn to move on and focus on the increasingly dangerous Florian. Florian has been on an unbelievable tear, taking down top contenders Roger Huerta and Joe Stevenson in his most recent fights. He is much, much more equipped for a title shot at this point in his career. As an added bonus, Georges St. Pierre is helping to prepare Florian for this bout, as one last jab at Penn.

Penn has been completely consumed by the apparent greasing during his last bout, and can’t seem to let it go. He has convinced himself it would have been a vastly different fight had the vaseline not been applied to St. Pierre. He had better refocus, and fast. Florian has cardio until next Tuesday, and is head and shoulders above the rest of the 155lb class.

Matt Hughes vs Anderson Silva?

March 23, 2009 By: MMAVu Category: Anderson Silva, Matt Hughes

I’m toying with the idea of moving to 185 to fight Silva, But I have to square away things in my weight class before I do that. This sport is all about testing yourself and what you’re capable of.

Is a direct quote from Matt Hughes, in an interview with Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports. For his medulla oblongata’s sake, let’s hope Hughes is not serious, or believing he can do it.

He can’t even take care of the top dogs in his own weight class anymore, like Georges St. Pierre or Thiago Alves. BJ Penn was kicking his ass until separating a rib. I’d also guess that Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck and maybe even Mike Swick would give Hughes all, if not more than he could handle. Next, we have the middleweight guys like Nate Marquardt, Yushin Okami, Michael Bisping and Damien Maia. Do you really think Hughes could take out his bigger clone (Dan Henderson) at 185lbs? These were all guys, save Okami via DQ and Bisping/Maia that Silva handled with ease.

The time for Hughes to move up to 185 would have been 4 years ago, but that ship has long since sailed. Hughes is a great fighter still, but it’s a lost cause moving up in weight at this point in time.
